November 9, 2007 - Panther fans have a lot to cheer with the recent completion of Manteno High School's softball facility thanks to a partnership between Vulcan Materials Company, Tenco, and Ozinga Concrete. The community partners donated labor and materials to construct new concrete pads for batting cages and bleachers. The companies worked together in the past to create an improved student environment.
"This program is unique because we were able to work with other employers in the area who shared our desire to give back," said Tim Theobald, Manteno Quarry plant manager. "We're all proud members of the Manteno community and we try to lend a helping hand whenever possible."
Manteno High School administration approached Vulcan earlier this year with an improvement plan for the girls' softball facility. The project became the first of Vulcan's new Adopt-a-School partnership with the high school. "Our girls are going to benefit from the partnership this spring," said Ryan Kemp, Manteno High School's Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. "We strive to make our facility the first class operation it is meant to be and Vulcan, Tenco and Ozinga Concrete are helping us to make this possible."
According to Kemp, visual benefits aren't the only win for Manteno High School. The improvements will also reduce the amount of time needed to maintain the softball facility in half.
"We are part of the community and it is important that we are actively involved in the lives of our neighbors, especially our schoolchildren," said Jim Walters of Ozinga Concrete. "We all look forward to opening day."
Vulcan now has Adopt-a-School partnerships with each school in Manteno School District 5. Also, for the past two years, Vulcan has been the title sponsor of Manteno's Oktoberfest and has partnered with local schools and police on a Halloween safety program.
