VMC adopts Middle School

Fossils to fuel student's learning experience

November 14, 2007 - They may be old, but fossils are getting a new life at Manteno Middle School. As part of their new Adopt-a-School partnership with the school, Vulcan Materials Company is providing fossils and rocks to the school for budding geologists to view. Neal-Masonry, Inc. teamed with Vulcan by purchasing the fossil display that will be monitored by the sixth grade students.

Bill Doran, a Vulcan Materials employee, graciously donated the artifacts from his own collection. The fossils themselves were found at the Manteno Quarry where Doran is a heavy equipment operator.

The fossils will not just be for show. Manteno Middle School students will be able to learn first-hand through Vulcan's donation. The fossils will be used by students hoping to identify and classify them as part of the school's geology curriculum.

"Donating these fossils and minerals to the school is such a rewarding part of our commitment to the community," says Tim Theobald, Manteno Quarry plant manager. "We are not just contributing to the school, but also to the education of our young people."

Manteno Middle School is not the only school to benefit from Vulcan's Adopt-a-School program. Vulcan now has partnerships with each school in Manteno School District 5. Earlier this month, Vulcan helped to contribute to the revamped softball facility at Manteno High School.

"Vulcan has really stepped up when it comes to helping our students" said David Conrad, Principal of Manteno Middle School. "The kids are going to learn a lot from this project and we hope to continue our partnership with Vulcan in the future"

Vulcan's support of the community also stretches outside of the classroom. For the past two years, Vulcan has served as the title sponsor of Manteno's Oktoberfest and has partnered with local schools and police on a Halloween safety program.
