A Job Well Done

Manteno Quarry Receives National Honor

April 8, 2008 - The Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) recently announced the recipients of its ninth annual minerals education awards to include Vulcan Materials Company's Manteno Quarry in Illinois. The IMCC will award the quarry with an honorable mention in the public outreach category for its stellar community efforts over the past year. Vulcan Materials Company is one of three organizations to receive this national recognition.

"We are proud of the Manteno Quarry for their excellent accomplishments," said Doug Lacke, Vulcan's Midwest Division Vice President of the Southern Region. "By combining education initiatives, community involvement and charitable contributions, the Manteno operation has set a fine example for the mining industry."

The minerals education awards will be presented at a banquet held in conjunction with the IMCC Annual Meeting, May 18-22, 2008 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Manteno Plant Manager Tim Theobald will represent Vulcan at the awards ceremony.

"We are committed to our strengthening our community in every way possible," said Theobald. "It's truly a rewarding experience to work with such a fine group of educators and village and business leaders."

The public outreach award is presented to an industry, environmental citizen, or to a state government body that has achieved excellence in educational outreach, environmental stewardship awareness, community partnerships and/or innovative initiatives that spearhead public education. The Manteno Quarry has adopted 4 schools in their Adopt-a-School program, which provides schoolchildren with tours and in-class learning opportunities. The Quarry has also launched the Manteno Community Advisory Group to facilitate ongoing communication by strengthening the company's relationship with the Village, its residents and local businesses.

"It's great to see the Manteno Quarry's efforts be recognized on the national stage," said Todd Creek, Chairman of the Community Advisory Group. "Vulcan has come a long way to establish themselves as a pillar in this community."
